English
If you want to tell the untold stories,
if you want to give voice to
the voiceless, you've got to find a language.
Which goes for film as well as prose,
for documentary as well as autobiography

Redhill's English department has been consistent in its success over many years. There are ten highly experienced and creative individuals who, together, make up an exciting and innovative team.
We believe that a varied curriculum is a successful one and here at Redhill, English is very much a faculty. Within our area, we have traditional English and Literature courses as well as Film Studies at GCSE and at AS level, Media Studies and Drama. From Year 7, students are taught how to analyse literature and film, media and non-fiction texts as well as being skilled in a range of drama conventions. Reading is actively encouraged and through our guided reading book box system, each student in Year 7 reads at least six books.
Over the last two years, we have developed an exciting GCSE course. We have a fast track group who take their English and Literature in Year 10 so that they can study AS Film in Year 11. We also run a GCSE English and GCSE Film Studies parallel to the traditional English and Literature double award GCSE. Students can opt for Drama and Media, subjects that continue to be popular. Drama in particular has a high profile in the school: over the last year or so, we have put on performances of 'Blood Brothers' and 'Beauty and the Beast' in addition to the big school productions of 'Oliver' and 'My Fair Lady'.
Our creative writers have the opportunity to write for two magazines: the lower school Redsource magazine and, for upper school, The Junction. Both these magazines have a high profile in the school and the students really enjoy writing for them.
